How Do Gas Detectors Work?

· Business Services

As the name suggests, gas detectors are the useful tools used to detect multiple types of gas leaks and prevent serious accidents or injuries they may cause.

For years, they have been used in various residential and commercial applications, along with other PPE gears such as viable particle counters, flow meters, and mass flow meters.

In this article, let’s take a further look into how gas detectors work.

How Gas Detectors Work

Gas detectors have sensors that measure the concentration of particular gases in the air. When a significant amount of gas is present into the air, to the point that it is hazardous, the detectors will alarm the user of the potential danger.

Early gas detectors were designed to detect just one gas. But, latest versions can now measure several gases at once including flammable gases, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide, among others.

Two Types of Gas Detectors

Fixed Gas Detectors - Mounted in areas that are at risk of gas leaks or those that you wish to protect from high volumes of gas.

Portable Gas Detectors - Clipped to the belt of a personnel to monitor the area around them. This is particularly helpful in an industrial workplace to ensure the safety of workers.

Which Type of Gas Detector is Right For You?

There are as many options for gas detectors as there are brands you can get them from. But, your choice boils down to the following factors you should consider:

Application - What will you be using the gas detector for? For your home or for work? As mentioned above, you will most likely need the portable version in the workplace and the fixed one for your home.

Type of Gas - Which type of gas do you need to be able to detect? Make sure that the one you’re investing in is able to detect it.

Experience - Lastly, the product you will want to buy should depend on your knowledge and experience. Moreover, if you’re using it for your home, you might be better off considering a user-friendly option.
