Interested in volunteering but don’t know where to start? For the first-timer, researching possible volunteering opportunities can be overwhelming. There are many foundations in Singapore alone that provide you with projects that you can assist with. There are many communities around the world that need the help of volunteers for their projects to be completed. Not only that, but there are a variety of causes that require people’s attention. Everything from sociopolitical issues, environmental issues, health issues and more needs to be addressed so we can take a step in the right direction.

So how do you know which projects you should participate in? If you’re having a hard time, here are some things you can take into account for your decision.

  1. Causes you care the most about. It’s unfortunate that volunteers have limited time and energy to contribute to social projects. Since there are so many that you can dedicate yourself to, you should prioritise the ones you feel most passionate about. If your passion lies in environmental issues, why not try out a project related to that? It will help in maintaining your motivation as well.
  2. Where your talents lie. Everyone’s talented at something. You can contribute the most to a cause when the project aligns with your talents and skills. Are you an enterprising entrepreneur? You might do well in business-related projects. Are you more on the artistic or creative side? You might do better in projects like teaching skills or leading seminars.
  3. What’s the most fun for you. It’s not wrong to try out a project because you think it might be fun-- it’s a win-win situation on both sides! You can do what you love the most while making big and sustained contributions to the project. People are more likely to come back and help out in the project.

There are many reasons to volunteer. If it’s your first time, don’t be afraid to just volunteer for any small project in Singapore. You’ll be surprised to realise how many benefits that volunteering can give back to you. Not only can you get the personal satisfaction of knowing your efforts will be appreciated, but volunteering can also help you find new friends, forge connections with important people, learn about new cultures, and also be able to apply the knowledge you used in your career. Volunteering makes you much more attractive to future employers and other business prospects.

Whatever project you decide to choose, though, remember to make sure that you always bring your A-game and do your best in participating.
